Properties

  • Chemical composition : Al (Balance), Cu (3.8-4.9%), Mg (1.2-1.8%), Mn (0.3-0.9%), Si (0.5% max).
  • Mechanical properties :
    • Elastic limit : 240 MPa
    • Tensile strength : 470 MPa
    • Lengthening: 10-20%
  • Corrosion resistance : Moderate, often requires protective coatings or surface treatments to improve corrosion resistance.

Machinability

EN AW-2024 is well known for its good machinability, although the copper in the alloy can make it slightly more difficult to machine than pure aluminum alloys. It is recommended to use suitable cutting tools to achieve the best results.

Applications

  • Aeronautics: Aircraft structures, fuselage elements, rivets.
  • Military : Manufacturing of ammunition, vehicle components.
  • Sport: Climbing and cycling equipment, where lightness and resistance are crucial.
